The Toyota Hilux Revo is the vehicle for groups whose trip involves gear as much as people: camping equipment, trekking kit, photography cases, or anything else that does not belong inside a passenger cabin.

The double cabin seats five in air-conditioned comfort while the open bed behind takes a load that no SUV of similar cost could carry. For a group heading to Sharan Forest with tents, or a photography team with cases, or anyone combining Shogran with a trek towards Makra Peak, this is the practical answer.

Mechanically it is a genuine four-wheel drive built for rough use rather than a road vehicle with badges. Diesel torque, high ground clearance and a chassis designed for load mean the Kiwai climb, the Siri Paye track and the rougher approach to Sharan Forest are all within its normal range rather than at its limit.

The automatic gearbox in our newer Revos makes the mountain sections easier than the manual versions, particularly on sustained hairpin descents.

The trade-off is that it seats five, not seven, and the ride is firmer than a Fortuner or Prado because the suspension is built to carry weight. For a family looking for comfort on a five-hour drive, the Fortuner is the better choice. For a group who need to bring things, the Revo is the only real answer in this price range.

Cargo in the open bed should be secured and covered, particularly in monsoon season. Our drivers carry straps and a cover as standard.
