Most Shogran itineraries consist of one item: go to Siri Paye. That is understandable but it wastes the rest of the trip, particularly when cloud takes your meadow morning away. Here is the fuller list.
1. Siri Paye meadows
The headline. High open meadow at around 9,500 ft, reached by a 45 to 60 minute jeep ride. Grazing horses, wildflowers in summer, views towards Makra Peak on a clear morning. Go early. Full detail in the Siri Paye guide.
2. The pine forest tracks
The most underrated thing in Shogran and completely free. Dense pine runs in every direction from the plateau and there are walking tracks throughout. This is your fallback when the meadows are fogged in, and it is genuinely lovely rather than a consolation prize.
3. Kiwai waterfall
Right beside the Kaghan road at the bottom of the Shogran climb, so you pass it on the way in and out. Ten minutes, no effort, and the roadside trout restaurants nearby are the proper way to eat on this road.
4. Manna Meadows
Another high pasture in the area, less visited than Siri Paye and quieter for it. Ask locally about current access, which varies by season and year.
5. Makra Peak
The prominent summit visible from Siri Paye. For trekkers it is a serious objective requiring a full day and a guide. For everyone else it is the thing you photograph from the meadow.
6. Sharan Forest
A separate detour, turning off at Paras lower down the valley. Dense deodar forest, cooler and quieter than Shogran, with cabins and camping. The access road is rough. Worth a night if you have the time or a long day trip if you do not.
7. Malkandi Forest
Near Sharan and often combined with it. Thick forest and walking country, and considerably less busy than anything around Shogran.
8. The drive up the Kaghan Valley
The road itself towards Kaghan town and Naran is a sight in its own right, following the Kunhar river with pull-offs throughout. Even if you do not intend to reach Naran, driving an hour up and back is worthwhile. See Shogran to Naran.
9. Shogran bazaar
Small and functional rather than picturesque, but it is where you will eat, buy supplies, arrange a jeep and get a feel for the place outside the resorts. Worth an hour.
10. Sunrise from the plateau
Costs nothing, requires only that you get up. If your hotel has an east-facing view, use it. If not, walk five minutes to open ground. On clear mornings this is as good as anything you will pay for.
Building an itinerary
Two nights: arrive, walk the forest and sleep early. Siri Paye at dawn on day two, afternoon at leisure. Kiwai on the way out.
Three nights: as above, plus a day for Sharan Forest or a run up the valley towards Naran.
Four or more: add Naran as a second base and potentially Babusar Top if the pass is open.
