Shogran Weather: Month-by-Month Temperatures and What to Actually Pack

Manna Meadows near Shogran

Quick answer

Shogran stays cool year-round because of its altitude of 7,749 feet (2,362 m). Summer days sit around 15-25 C with cold nights near 8-12 C. Winter drops below freezing with snow from December to February. Even in July you will want a jacket after sunset.

The single most useful thing to understand about Shogran weather is that altitude, not the calendar, does most of the work. At 7,749 feet the town sits high enough that it stays cool when Islamabad and Lahore are unbearable, and cold enough that it gets snowed in when the plains are merely chilly.

People arrive in June wearing what they wore in Rawalpindi that morning and spend the first evening shivering. That is the mistake this guide exists to prevent.

How Shogran weather works

Roughly speaking, temperature drops about 6.5 C for every 1,000 metres you climb. Shogran is about 1,800 metres above Islamabad, which puts it somewhere in the region of 10 to 15 degrees cooler on the same day. That gap is why the valley is a summer destination in the first place.

Two other things matter. First, the daily swing here is large. A pleasant 22 C afternoon can become a 9 C night within a couple of hours after sunset. Second, cloud arrives fast. Clear mornings turning to thick afternoon fog is normal, not unusual, and it is the main reason experienced visitors head up to Siri Paye early.

Season by season

Spring (March to May)

The snow retreats upward through March and April. Lower Shogran greens up first, the higher meadows later. Days are mild, mornings are properly cold, and rain is common. Late April and May are lovely and much quieter than summer, though the very high tracks may still be soft or closed early in this window.

Pack layers you can shed by midday. A waterproof shell is worth more here than a heavy coat.

Summer (June to August)

This is peak season and the reason most people come. June usually gives the clearest mornings of the year. July and August bring the monsoon, which turns everything an almost implausible green but also brings afternoon cloud, mud, and occasional landslides on the Kaghan road.

Daytime is genuinely comfortable in a t-shirt. Nights are not. A fleece or light down jacket is not optional.

Autumn (September to November)

September is quietly the best-kept secret of the valley. The monsoon has eased, the crowds have gone home, the air is clear, and the meadows are still green. October cools sharply and colours turn. By November nights are freezing and the tourist infrastructure starts closing down.

Winter (December to February)

Snow, silence, and a completely different place. Daytime often hovers near or just above freezing, nights fall well below. The jeep track to Siri Paye closes. Some hotels shut entirely. It is beautiful and genuinely worth doing, but it is a different trip requiring different planning, which is covered in the winter guide.

What to pack, by season

Summer (June-August): t-shirts and light trousers for daytime, one warm mid-layer, a waterproof jacket, shoes with grip, sunscreen, and a power bank. The sun at altitude burns faster than people expect even on cloudy days.

Shoulder seasons (April-May, September-October): everything above plus a proper insulating layer, a warm hat, and gloves if you plan early morning starts.

Winter (November-March): serious cold weather clothing, waterproof boots with real tread, thermal base layers, and a backup power source. Load shedding plus cold is a bad combination for phone batteries.

Weather and the road

Rain and snow change more than your comfort. Heavy monsoon rain triggers rockfall on the Balakot-Kaghan stretch, and the last climb from Kiwai up to Shogran becomes slick. In winter, snow can close that climb entirely. Frequently asked questions

What is the temperature in Shogran right now?

Shogran generally runs 10-15 C cooler than Islamabad on any given day. In summer expect roughly 15-25 C during the day and 8-12 C at night. In winter, daytime hovers near freezing and nights drop well below. For live conditions, check a forecast set to Shogran or Kaghan rather than Mansehra, which sits much lower and reads far warmer.

Is Shogran cold in June?

June days are comfortable, usually in the low twenties Celsius, but nights are cold enough to need a fleece or light jacket. June also tends to have the clearest mornings of the year, which makes it the best month for views from Siri Paye.

Does it rain a lot in Shogran?

Late July and August are the wettest period because of the monsoon. Rain is usually afternoon and evening rather than all day, but it makes tracks muddy and can cause rockfall on the approach roads. June and September are noticeably drier.

What should I wear in Shogran in summer?

Light clothing for the day, one warm layer for evenings, and a waterproof jacket. Shoes with grip matter more than most people realise because the meadows and tracks are uneven and often wet.
