Murree to Shogran: Distance, Route and Why It Takes Longer Than You Think

Deodar forest in the Kaghan Valley

Quick answer

Murree to Shogran is about 180 to 200 km and takes four and a half to five and a half hours by road, going via Abbottabad, Mansehra and Balakot. Despite both being hill stations, they sit in different parts of the region and the drive is longer than most people expect.

People pair Murree and Shogran in their heads because both are hill stations at similar altitudes. Geographically they have less in common than that suggests, and the drive between them is a solid half day.

The distance and time

Roughly 180 to 200 km depending on which route out of Murree you take, and realistically four and a half to five and a half hours. That is not a day trip. If you are trying to see both, plan at least one night in each.

The route

Murree down to Abbottabad

Descend from Murree towards the Hazara side. This section is winding and slow, and in peak season Murree’s own traffic can make the first hour frustrating. Leaving early matters more here than on most legs.

Abbottabad to Mansehra

Straightforward main road, usually under an hour. Abbottabad is a good breakfast or fuel stop.

Mansehra to Balakot

An hour to an hour and a half. Balakot is your last dependable fuel, ATM and mechanic.

Balakot to Kiwai to Shogran

About 34 km along the Kaghan road, then the steep 7 to 9 km climb. Allow one and a half to two hours for this final stage. Full detail in the Islamabad route guide, which shares this section.

Why it feels longer than the map

Almost none of this drive is on fast road. Murree’s descent is winding, the Kaghan road is a river road with limited overtaking, and the final climb takes 30 to 45 minutes for under 10 km. Average speeds are low throughout, which is why 190 km takes five hours.

Should you do both?

They offer genuinely different things. Murree is closer to Islamabad, more developed, and busier. Shogran is deeper into the mountains, quieter, and gives you access to Siri Paye and the wider Kaghan Valley.

If you have four or more days, doing both works well: Murree first as it is nearer, then Shogran, then optionally onwards to Naran. If you have two or three days, pick one. For most people wanting alpine scenery rather than a hill-station town, Shogran is the better use of limited time.

Practical notes

  • Leave Murree early. Its traffic is the least predictable part of the day.
  • Fuel at Abbottabad or Balakot.
  • Aim to arrive in Shogran in daylight because of the final climb.
  • Check the climb is passable if travelling in winter. See is Shogran open right now.
