Mansehra to Balakot
The motorway ends and the road narrows. This section takes roughly an hour to an hour and a half depending on traffic. Balakot is the last proper town with reliable fuel, ATMs and mechanics. Fill up here regardless of what your gauge says.
Balakot to Kiwai
About 34 km along the Kaghan road, following the Kunhar river. Scenically this is where the trip starts feeling like a mountain trip. Allow an hour to an hour and a half. This stretch is where monsoon rockfall causes delays, so a slow section here is normal rather than alarming.
Kiwai to Shogran
The final 7 to 9 km, and the reason the total time surprises people. This is a steep climb with tight hairpin bends that takes 30 to 45 minutes even when conditions are good. Whether your own vehicle should attempt it is covered in is Shogran accessible by car. Local jeeps wait at Kiwai if you would rather not.
Where the time actually goes
Five to six hours assumes one stop and no surprises. Realistically add time for:
- Peak season traffic on the Kaghan road in July and August, which can add well over an hour
- Weekend congestion at Balakot and the Kiwai turn-off
- Rain, which slows the last climb considerably
- Photo stops, which you will make whether you plan to or not
Leaving Islamabad before 6 AM makes a genuine difference. It gets you through Mansehra before the traffic builds and puts you in Shogran with daylight to spare.
Worthwhile stops on the way
Abbottabad for breakfast if you left very early. Balakot for fuel, cash and a proper meal. Kiwai for the roadside trout, which is a genuine local thing rather than a tourist trap, and for the waterfall right beside the road.
If you are not driving yourself
Public transport gets you as far as Balakot or Kiwai reliably enough, after which you are looking at a local jeep or a shared vehicle for the climb. It works, but it eats time and gives you no flexibility once you arrive, which matters when Siri Paye depends on an early start.
