Suzuki Bolan

The Suzuki Bolan is the cheapest way to move seven people to Shogran, and it is honest about what it is: a simple, tough, no-frills van that has been carrying families and luggage on Pakistani roads for decades.

We are upfront about the trade-offs. Most Bolans do not have air conditioning, the ride is firm, and seven adults plus luggage is a genuine load for a 800cc engine on a mountain climb. On the flat and on the motorway it is fine. On the steep section from Kiwai up to Shogran, a fully loaded Bolan is slow, and on a hot day it needs a driver who will let it cool rather than push it.

That said, the altitude works in your favour on comfort. Shogran runs 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the plains, so the lack of AC matters far less on this route than it would on a summer run to Lahore. From Balakot upward, windows down is genuinely pleasant.

Where the Bolan makes most sense is a large family or a group of students and friends who care more about the total cost than about comfort, or a group that needs to move a lot of luggage and camping gear. The rear cargo area swallows more than any car in this price bracket.

It is not a 4x4, so Siri Paye is a separate jeep hire, and in winter conditions we would steer you towards something with more capability.

Every Bolan goes out serviced with brakes checked, which matters more than usual on a heavy vehicle descending from 7,749 feet. Drivers know the route and will manage the climb sensibly rather than fast. If your group wants AC, look at the APV instead.
