Toyota Corolla GLi
The Toyota Corolla GLi is the default choice for people who want a comfortable, unremarkable, completely reliable drive from Islamabad to Shogran. It is the most common car on Pakistani roads for good reason, and on a five to six hour journey that reliability is worth more than any feature list.
The 1300cc engine is well matched to this route. On the Hazara Motorway it cruises without strain, and on the climb from Kiwai it has enough torque to pull four adults and luggage without the driver hunting for gears. Ride quality on the Balakot to Kiwai river road, which is the roughest paved section, is noticeably better than in a small hatchback.
The boot is the practical advantage over a Cultus or Alto. Four people going to Shogran for three nights, with warm layers and a camera bag, fit comfortably. In a smaller car that same load ends up on someone's lap.
For business travellers, airport pickups and anyone bringing guests, the Corolla also simply presents better than an economy hatchback, which is a real consideration for some bookings.
The limits are the usual ones for a sedan. Ground clearance is lower than a Cultus, so a heavily loaded Corolla wants a careful line over the rough patches. Siri Paye needs a jeep. And in snow, a 4x4 is the right call.
Our Corollas are maintained on a service schedule with brake condition checked before every mountain trip, which matters because the descent from 7,749 feet is where brakes get tested. Drivers know the road and will time your departure so you complete the Kiwai climb in daylight. If you want an automatic, the Altis Grande is the same car with more equipment.
