The Toyota Corolla Altis Grande is the Corolla with the equipment that makes a long mountain drive noticeably easier. The 1800cc automatic is the headline difference, and it earns its cost on exactly the sections where this route is demanding.

On the Kiwai climb, an automatic removes the constant gear changes on hairpins, which is the part of the drive that tires people most. On the motorway, cruise control and better sound insulation turn the first two hours into something restful rather than something to endure. Climate control holds a temperature properly as you gain 6,000 feet of altitude and the outside air changes completely.

The Grande is what we send for airport pickups where the guest has just flown in, for honeymoon bookings, and for anyone who wants the trip to feel like part of the holiday rather than the price of it. The interior finish, alloy wheels and general presentation are a clear step up from a GLi.

Practically, it carries four adults and a full weekend of luggage without compromise. The boot is the same generous Corolla shape.

It remains a two-wheel-drive sedan. Siri Paye requires a jeep, and we will tell you that rather than let you find out on the track. In winter, when the Kiwai climb has snow on it, we will recommend a Prado or Fortuner instead.

All Grande rentals include a driver, and on this vehicle in particular we assign drivers who have run the Kaghan road repeatedly, because a smooth drive is most of what you are paying for.
