The road from Islamabad to Kiwai is entirely fine for any vehicle. Motorway, then main road, then a river road. Nothing about it requires special capability.
The last 7 to 9 km from Kiwai up to Shogran is where it gets interesting. It is a steep climb with tight hairpin bends and sections where the surface is variable. In dry weather a well-maintained ordinary car will make it, and thousands do every season.
What that climb demands is not four wheel drive but three other things:
- An engine with enough torque to pull the gradient in first and second gear repeatedly without overheating
- Brakes in genuinely good condition, because coming down is harder on a car than going up
- A driver comfortable with hill starts and blind hairpins, including reversing to let vehicles pass
If any of those three is doubtful, leave the car at Kiwai. Local jeeps wait there and the fare for the climb is modest.
Which cars struggle
Small-engined cars carrying five adults and luggage struggle most. Low-clearance cars can ground on rough patches. Automatics without a manual mode can suffer on the descent because engine braking is limited. Older cars with tired brakes should genuinely not attempt it.
Getting to Siri Paye
No. Not in a car, not in a crossover, not in a soft-roader. The track above Shogran is rock and dirt with severe gradients and it takes a proper 4×4 jeep 45 to 60 minutes to cover 8 to 10 km. That timing tells you everything about the surface.

Summer, dry: ordinary car fine to Shogran, with the caveats above.
Monsoon, wet: the climb becomes slippery and visibility drops. Manageable but slower and more demanding. Rockfall on the Kaghan road is a separate concern.

- Check brakes and coolant before you leave home. This is the single most useful preparation.
- Fill up at Balakot. Do not count on fuel above it.
- Drive the climb in daylight, especially the first time.
- Uphill traffic has right of way on the hairpins as a matter of practice.
