Suzuki Cultus

The Suzuki Cultus is the vehicle we recommend most often to couples and small families heading to Shogran, because it sits at the point where cost and capability meet. The 1000cc engine has meaningfully more pull than an Alto, which you feel on the climb from Kiwai, and the boot actually holds luggage for four people rather than two.

On the Islamabad to Shogran run it is comfortable throughout. Motorway to Mansehra, main road to Balakot, river road to Kiwai, then the steep section. A Cultus with four passengers manages that final climb in dry conditions without drama, which is not something we say about every small car.

Ground clearance is the other reason it earns its place. The Kaghan road has rough patches, particularly after monsoon rain has moved gravel around, and the Cultus clears them where lower cars scrape.

It is still a two-wheel-drive hatchback, so the same limits apply as any car: no Siri Paye, and in snow you want something else entirely. If you are travelling between December and February, talk to us about a 4x4 instead.

Where the Cultus works best is a three or four day Shogran trip for two adults and a couple of children, or two couples travelling light. It is economical enough that fuel does not dominate the budget, and comfortable enough that five hours in it is fine rather than an ordeal.

All rentals include a driver who drives this route regularly and knows where the bad patches are, where to stop, and how to time the arrival so you are not doing the Kiwai climb after dark. Fuel can be included or excluded depending on which you prefer.
