Suzuki Alto
The Suzuki Alto is the cheapest way to put four people on the road from Islamabad, and for couples or a small family travelling light it does the job without fuss. Its 660cc engine sips fuel, which matters on a 250 km run where fuel is a real share of the total cost.
Be clear about what it is and is not. On the motorway to Mansehra and the main road through Balakot it is perfectly comfortable. On the final 7 to 9 km climb from Kiwai up to Shogran, a fully loaded Alto with four adults and luggage will be working hard in first gear. It can make it in dry weather with a careful driver, but it has little margin, and we would not send one up in rain or after dark.
We rent the Alto for two situations. The first is a couple or a pair of friends who want the lowest possible cost and are packing light. The second is a group that wants an economical vehicle for the plains section and plans to switch to a local jeep at Kiwai for the climb, which is a completely normal and sensible arrangement.
What it will not do is Siri Paye. That track needs a 4x4 and there is no version of this conversation where an Alto attempts it.
Every Alto in our fleet is serviced before it goes out, with particular attention to brakes, because the descent from Shogran is harder on a small car than the climb. Rates include a driver who knows the Kaghan road, and we can quote with or without fuel depending on how you prefer to budget. For anything above four passengers, look at the Cultus, APV or BR-V instead.
