Getting up there
The track from Shogran up to Siri Paye is not a road in any normal sense. It is a rough, rocky, steep jeep track and there is no version of it that a saloon car should attempt. Local 4×4 jeeps run it constantly in season and their drivers know every part of it.
The climb takes 45 minutes to an hour each way for what is only 8 to 10 km. That should tell you what the surface is like. It is bumpy enough that people with back problems should think carefully, and it is not a comfortable ride for very young children.
Jeeps wait in Shogran bazaar and most hotels will arrange one for you. Rates are per jeep, not per person, which means a group of six splits it comfortably and a solo traveller does not. If you are travelling alone or as a couple, ask about sharing.
Why the morning matters
This is the single most useful thing in this guide. Cloud builds over the meadow as the day warms. In summer it is entirely normal for a clear 7 AM to become complete whiteout by 11. People who leave at 10 frequently drive an hour, arrive, see nothing, and drive back.
Leave Shogran by 7 AM. Earlier in July and August. The light is better, the track is quieter, and you are giving yourself the best chance the day has to offer.
What is actually up there
Open rolling meadow, grazing horses, a handful of seasonal tea stalls and food shacks, and views out towards Makra Peak. In summer the grass is deep green and studded with wildflowers. In late season it browns off.
There is no infrastructure to speak of, no reliable mobile signal, and no shelter beyond the stalls. It is a place you visit for a few hours, not somewhere you linger all day.
Walking up
You can hike it. It takes roughly three to four hours up depending on fitness, and it is a genuine climb rather than a stroll. Some people walk up and take a jeep down, which is a reasonable compromise. Start very early, carry water, and be honest with yourself about altitude.
Horses
Horses are available for the last section from where the jeeps stop. They are a short ride rather than a substitute for the jeep, and rates are negotiated on the spot.
Practical points
- Dress warmer than Shogran. The meadow is a thousand feet higher and windier.
- Carry cash. Nothing up there takes cards.
- Agree the jeep price before you get in, including waiting time if you want the driver to stay.
- Take your rubbish back down. The meadow has a litter problem and it is entirely visitor-created.
- Altitude is real. Nearly 9,500 ft affects some people. Go slowly on the first walk.
Season and closure
The track is generally open from around May through October, though exact dates depend on snowmelt and snowfall each year. In winter it closes and no amount of asking will get you up.
