Quick answer
Siri Paye is about 8 to 10 km from Shogran, but the rough jeep track means the drive takes 45 to 60 minutes each way. On foot it is roughly three to four hours uphill. The elevation gain is around 1,700 feet, from 7,749 ft in Shogran to approximately 9,500 ft at the meadows.
Eight to ten kilometres taking an hour is the detail that tells you everything about this track. It is not distance that makes the journey; it is surface and gradient.
Why so slow for so short
The track from Shogran up to Siri Paye is unmetalled rock and dirt, steep throughout, and narrow enough that passing requires one vehicle to find a wider spot. Jeeps crawl it in low gear. Anything faster would be uncomfortable and unwise.
You also gain roughly 1,700 feet of altitude in that distance, going from Shogran at 7,749 ft to around 9,500 ft at the meadows. That is a sustained climb rather than a gentle rise.
The three ways up
By jeep
The standard option and what nearly everyone does. Local 4×4 jeeps run the track constantly in season. Hired per vehicle rather than per person. Bumpy enough that it is worth mentioning to anyone with back problems. Full practical detail in the Siri Paye guide.
On foot
Roughly three to four hours uphill depending on fitness, and around two to two and a half coming down. It is a proper hike rather than a walk: sustained gradient at altitude on a rough surface.
If you are going to do it, start very early, carry more water than you think you need, and be realistic about how altitude affects you. Many people walk up and take a jeep down, which is a sensible compromise.
Partly on horseback
Horses are available for the last section from where jeeps typically stop. They cover a short distance rather than the whole track and are negotiated on the spot.
Timing your day
Work backwards from cloud. Leaving Shogran at 7 AM puts you at the meadows around 8, giving you a clear window before cloud typically builds through the morning. Leaving at 10 gets you there around 11, which in July and August is frequently too late.
Budget three to four hours total for a jeep trip including time at the top. Budget a full day if you are walking.
Season
The track is generally usable from around May to October. It closes with snow in winter and reopens once the melt allows. Do not plan around it between November and April without checking; see is Shogran open right now.
What you cannot do
You cannot drive this in an ordinary car, a crossover or a soft-roader. The surface and gradient rule it out and attempting it risks damage and a recovery. See is Shogran accessible by car.
